LaFace Records

The Atlanta powerhouse behind TLC — the best-selling American girl group of all time, who filed for bankruptcy in 1995 while their album was a diamond-selling hit, exposing how little of the money reached the artists.

LaFace Records was an Atlanta label founded by Antonio "L.A." Reid and Babyface in 1989, distributed through Arista/BMG. It launched TLC, Usher, OutKast, and Toni Braxton.

LaFace's most cautionary story is TLC: at the peak of their success, with millions of albums sold, the group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1995 — a stark illustration of how recoupment, management cuts, and contract structure can leave even superstar artists broke.
